Hi, I'm Olivia

I'm 25 and I live in North Lincolnshire. Teaching is my passion; it's something I have always loved and I can't imagine doing anything else. I think my parents knew I'd grow up to teach when they saw seven-year-old me giving my stuffed animals homework assignments.

I've been working in education for four years now — first as an in-school tutor, then as a teaching assistant at Winifred Holtby Academy. During my time there I learnt so much about working with children and how to help them reach their potential.

I attended Anlaby Acre Heads Primary School before moving up to South Hunsley School and Sixth Form College. I started learning the piano when I was 6, taught myself the guitar at 10, then began percussion lessons in my second year of high school. I play piano at grade 8 standard and drums at grade 6, and I've given piano lessons for several years. I used to be part of my school orchestra and Hull Philharmonic, and I played in the band for many musical productions including The Sound of Music at Hull Truck Theatre.

At school I was shy and quite anxious. There were many teachers who made extra time for me and had a real impact on my life — I want to do the same for others.

I am DBS checked and have experience working with many kinds of Special Educational Needs including ASD, ADHD, dyslexia and other SpLDs. For fun I enjoy photography, lots of different sports, and reading about my favourite thing in the world: dinosaurs.

Lessons & prices

In person in a purpose-built cabin at the bottom of my garden in Horkstow, or online over Zoom.

Maths

KS2, KS3 and GCSE Maths, up to grade 9. All exam boards — AQA, Edexcel, OCR and others.

Spanish

KS2, KS3 and GCSE Spanish, up to grade 9. Lessons tailored to your specific exam board.

Music

Piano lessons at any level, plus an introduction to drum kit. Work towards grades or just learn for fun.

Group sessions

Small group sessions, including for home-educated children. Price depends on group size — get in touch.

Why a tutor?

Why do I need a tutor?

GCSEs are difficult. Every school works hard to provide high quality education to get its pupils up to standard for these tough exams. So why hire a tutor?

Firstly, the student gets all the attention. Teachers do their very best to manage classrooms of around 30 students, which often include other pupils who either don't want to work or like to cause distractions. That's not always the case — there could be a class of 30 silent, hard-working pupils — but it is still a challenge to attend to all the needs of such a large group. In a 1:1 setting the student is never waiting for an answer to a question, is never distracted by others, and has the full attention of the tutor.

Not all students learn the same way. A 1:1 setting lets me tailor the lesson to the specific needs of the student. Once you know what kind of learner you're dealing with — visual, auditory and so on — you can deliver a more focused and appropriate lesson. Other benefits include increased creativity, use of devices, and improved communication.

FAQ

All you need to know before you schedule a lesson

Where do the in-person lessons take place?

I live in Horkstow. Lessons take place in a custom-built cabin at the bottom of my garden. The cabin has all the things you would find in a regular classroom, and there's also a sound-proof studio for the music lessons.

How long do sessions last?

Sessions are usually either 30 minutes or 1 hour. However, I'm flexible and do my best to cater to the individual needs of each student.

What subjects do you teach?

Spanish, Maths and Music:

KS2, KS3 and GCSE Spanish (up to grade 9)
KS2, KS3 and GCSE Maths (up to grade 9)
Piano lessons
Introduction to drum kit

Do you cater to different exam boards?

Yes. It doesn't matter if the student is doing AQA, Edexcel, OCR or another exam board. The content is very similar across all of them, but I'm able to distinguish between them and tailor the lessons towards a specific board.

Are there tests and/or homework?

That's up to you. Once I have a good understanding of how a student works, I'm better able to determine if homework would be beneficial. I use quizzes from time to time to check understanding of a topic, but no formal or graded tests are administered.

What kinds of payment do you accept?

Bank transfer is my preferred method of payment. I'll also accept cash or cheque. This can be done weekly, monthly, or as a block payment for a set number of lessons.

Does the student need to bring their own equipment?

Yes. It's preferred that a student brings a pencil case with basic equipment, however I'll always have spare equipment available. Students are welcome to bring their own technology such as laptops and tablets if they'd prefer.

What if I can't attend one of my lessons?

It's preferred that advance notice of at least 72 hours is given when a student is unable to attend. If that isn't possible due to the unforeseen nature of the absence, you won't be charged as long as the lesson can be rescheduled for later the same week. If notice is less than 24 hours, you'll need to pay for the missed lesson.

Do I have to take grades in piano, or can I just learn for fun?

That's entirely up to you. Whether you want to take exams or just learn to play your favourite song, I'm more than happy to help.
